For 2010, Travis Pastrana will travel to Long Beach and attempt a world record jump on New Year’s Eve for Red Bull: New Year. No Limits, live on ESPN. Pastrana will be jumping off the Pine Street Pier in Long Beach, California, onto a floating barge anchored in Rainbow Harbor to obliterate the current 171-foot record. If you’re lucky and scored VIP tickets to catch Pastrana’s insanity live and in person, Team SCS will see you there! Check out the practice video.

If you didn’t score VIP, don’t worry, the jump will also be broadcasted live on ESPN starting at approximately 11:00 p.m. ET/8:00 p.m. PT, right after the Chik-Fil-A Bowl. Watch it from the pier or from the edge of your seat in your living room – just don’t miss it! The event starts at 6 p.m. and the actual jump is at 9 p.m.

We saw Mitch who now works at Subaru corporate, formerly at Puente Hills Subaru. They have Ken Block and Travis Pastrana’s rally cars on display, along with Subaru’s Road Race Team STI and a few other cars.

In front of Ken Block’s car they had rally videos going, DC Shoes Auto Collection on display throughout the booth, and some cool tricks in some of the show cars. One of the SPT cars had this custom display in the hatch of the car that would pull out drawers of SPT parts.

I wasn’t able to take too many photos because they were still setting up the booth. You could still see all the wax drying on the paint of all the cars. We’ll probably be going by the show in an hour or two after lunch to get more photos.

Subaru of Las Vegas brought a van that I’m guessing is powered by some sort of Subaru motor. I’ll be walking around and getting more information today as I meet everyone at all the different booths.

This Legacy wagon had a great concept. You could actually fit that gokart into the back of the Legacy. I wasn’t really too impressed with the style and parts used on the car, but the idea was killer. Well that’s it for now, we’ll update as we get more photos from the show.

Tons of Subaru enthusiasts from all over.

In addition to the usual car show, Subiefest features a track and racing experience open to Subaru owners of all levels of experience. For $150, you’re offered 4-5 sessions with your car on Willow’s big track, a high speed 2.5 mile road course. An extra $100 will get you in the Time Attack Challenge with two different classes separating street cars and race cars.

This year’s competition brought back defending champions as well as many of those new to the sport. It’s the ultimate test of a car’s balance in power and handling, and of course driver skill. Many of the drivers felt the track was fastest in the morning, but surprisingly a few were able to drive their fastest laps in the finals. In time attack, all that matters is that one perfect lap.

Jonathan Gih’s 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STi

Team SCS drivers Jonathan Gih and Vincent Tam competed in the Street Modified class with their 2008 STis. The class restricted tires to no less than 140 tread wear, full interior intact, stock turbo, and only minor aero modifications. While there were only 4 entries in the class, competition was fierce between Jonathan Gih and Kevin Tidwell of IWSTI, battling for time.

In the final session, Jonathan was able to drop his time into the 1.34.432, besting Kevin’s 1.35.002. Team SCS would like to congratulate Kevin on his amazing time considering his limited suspension modifications consisting of only Racecomp Engineering springs and a small assortment of Whiteline suspension enhancements. Great driving Kevin as always!

Down on power, unable to shift to sixth; 1.35.774!

Vincent finished third in Street with his top mount intercooler blocked off, running a very close 1.35.774. Next time he’ll have to check that hood scoop when swapping hoods! In the practice sessions, Jonathan and Vincent swapped cars to get a taste for different suspension setups. Look for Vincent’s article documenting his driving impressions of different coilover suspensions for the 2008+ STi, stay tuned.

Ferdie Ang’s 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STi

In Unlimited class, Team SCS driver Ferdie Ang competed in his 400WHP 2008 STi, despite ongoing issues with his transmission. Typically competing in Redline Time Attack’s Street class, it was definitely an exciting challenge for Ferdie to go head to head with Modified and Unlimited cars. Regardless, it was an extremely fun event for Ferdie and is looking forward to next year’s race season.

Ultimately, our friend Russ Warr set the fastest time in Unlimited with the LIC Motorsports / Crawford Performance STi, driving a blazing fast 1.22.591. Speaking of Crawford Performance, Ferdie was invited to pilot their Tiger Time Attack Car in one of the practice sessions, the same car Tarzan Yamada races in the Redline Time Attack series. Ferdie will be releasing an article detailing his experience driving their amazing car shortly.

On the show front, our own Paul Yim of YimiSport won best of show for 2008 Subaru STis. Looks like that new Laguna Seca Blue paintjob did the trick with paint matched intercooler piping. We look forward to seeing Paul’s car in competition at the Super Lap Battle Finals in a few weeks at Buttonwillow Raceway.

Lookin' good right?

Not hesitant enough to say no though! These shoes are a huge improvement over the old SRT Volcano Shoes. Nice as they were, there’s always something better just over the horizon. Let’s face it, everything always looks better in studio photos with a little nudge from a Photoshop guru, no doubt. With that in mind, I thought I’d take some photos of my own, after wearing the shoes around town for about a week. I used my point-and-shoot Canon Powershot SD780 IS; nothing to brag about, but gets the job done.

A little flashy, but not outrageous.

My first impression: they’re light, well cushioned, and have great grip and traction. In terms of driving, the sole is a little too thick to get the same feedback you’d expect of a shoe meant for racing, although it’s not bad. They’re a little wide too, which I personally like, making heel-toe downshifting very easy to do, especially with the pedals so close together in my Subaru Impreza WRX STi.

The SRT Redwood Shoes is a new release, you won’t be seeing many people wearing these just yet. I was looking around on Google Shopping and as far as I can tell, we’re the only guys out there selling these right now. If you have any questions, send them my way: sam[at]team-scs.com.

Mackin Industries hosts this series of events, appropriately named “Industry Day.” For a mere $90, participants are not only offered abundant track time, but also fed tasty pizza, replenished with ice cold beverages, and provided transponders for timing. It’s the road racer’s wet dream; there isn’t a single track organization in California that can offer anyone a better deal.

For that reason, attendance is by invitation only and taking into consideration that there are literally hundreds of aftermarket companies and magazines out there to choose from, we’re honored to have been offered seats for 4 of our own drivers. We made sure we were on our best behavior in gratitude of this amazing event.

In the pits was 0-60 Magazine, AEM Power, Amplified Motorsports, Attic, Brembo USA, Clarion, Design Craft, Dynamic Autosports, Evasive Motorsports, Forman Performance, Greddy, HKS USA, Import Tuner, Pro-Motion, S&A Design, Six Auto, Source Link, Sparco, Super Street, Team SCS, TEIN, Toyota, West Covina Nissan, Westend Alignment, Yokohama Tire USA and many more.

Beginners were offered a great opportunity to receive instruction from the racing success of top drivers Billy Johnson (a professional racer competing in Grand-Am for Ranch/Roush Racing and winner of time attack events across the country) as well as Japanese Formula D drift driver Taka Aono (SCCA Solo 2 Champion).

The event was an incredible success, although unfortunate that Richard Tang’s Nissan 240SX flipped midday exiting the esses. Richard was luckily not injured in the accident thanks to his roll cage, but the same could not be said for the show winning 240SX he’d built.

On track, temperatures were exceeding 125 degrees Fahrenheit. Almost every car was overheating, although despite the heat, good times were had all around. Each of our cars was driven home without exception and we look forward to Industry Day V, which has already been set for December 20 to take place at the main track, Big Willow.

Team SCS would like to thank Mackin Industries staff for organizing a once in a lifetime event; we look forward to seeing everyone again in December. You can bet we’ll be there to shoot it out for fastest lap. We didn’t get it this time; watch out for us at Big Willow!

The first event took place only 6 months prior at K1 Speed in Torrance, with Team SCS placing a respectable 3rd place, proving the competition was fierce. For the second installment of what hopefully will be many more to come, the competition would be held at Dromo One in Orange, California next to Disneyland.

TripleX Crew’s Sashin and Yukio were the organizers, requiring a minimum of 5 participants per team and each participant is a member of one of the following internet forums: IWSTI, Nasioc, SoCal Subies, and RS25. The event is 3 rounds in duration: practice, qualifying, and the finals. Qualifying would divide the drivers into 4 groups, the grid of each group determined by fastest single lap time.

Leading into the event, Team SCS and SCV would become the favorites to take the grand championship. Each team had 10 or more capable drivers, allowing each team an equal opportunity to win. Standouts from the last event were Ferdie Ang / Vincent Tam for Team SCS, and Jaime Shadrick / Kevin Tidwell for Team SCV.

Participating in the event was F4, Pomona / Santa Clarita Valley (SCV), Boba / Monrovia, and SCS. Each team was anxious for a win and Team SCS would drive first on the cold track and tires. Nonetheless, they proved themselves worthy of the hype and ready to bring the pain with Vincent Tam driving what would become the fastest lap time in practice among all the teams (despite the obvious disadvantage of a cold track and tires).

In qualifying, Team SCS would drive first yet again, resulting in the majority of the team qualifying in the two fastest groups for the finals. The last final of the day and also the fastest group would have 8 of 10 drivers from Team SCS, a strong indicator of the outcome to soon follow. Team SCS emerged victorious, claiming 9 out of 10 of the fastest drivers in the finals.

Ferdie Ang set the bar with a blazing 20.031, the fastest lap time in the finals, closely followed by Vincent Tam and Darin Nishimura from Westend Alignment (tied at 20.200). With an average lap time 3/10ths of a second faster than any other participating team, Team SCS ran away with the grand championship, an indisputable win.
